Getting tired of so much rain!

The average rainfall in Horry County is 51” per year. I believe most of that has come in the previous 4 months!! The average rainfall for the United States is 37” so we already have a great deal of moisture to make our countryside very green. We are quick to tell the visitors coming to Myrtle Beach or the Grand Strand that we have an average of 214 days of beautiful sunshine!! All real estate looks better in the sunshine, our attitudes are better in the sunshine, and we get more exercise when there is sunshine. Hopefully by the first of March we will see a lot more sunshine. Until then, here are a few pointers from the National Weather Service on how to drive safely in the rain.

  • First and foremost: slow down!

  • Stay toward the middle lanes - water tends to pool in the outside lanes.

  • Maintain proper following distance (3 Second Rule). This needs to be increased in wet weather.

  • Don't follow large trucks or busses too closely. The spray created by their large tires reduces your vision. Take care when passing them as well; if you must pass, do so quickly and safely.

  • Be more alert when driving in wet or slippery conditions. Watch out for brake lights in front of you.

My relatives live in Southern California and it is absolutely beautiful there. But the one thing I missed was the wonderful “green” everywhere back home in South Carolina. As far as you can see there is brown, brown, brown. Occasional green patches of irrigated lawns and heavily landscaped areas around commercial buildings look like patchwork in the dessert. I am tired of so much rain but it will soon be gone and the sunshine and visitors from all across our great nation will be coming to enjoy the sandy beaches and lush green surroundings.
